Dass es in Bella Italia gute Wellen
gibt, ist wohl kein Geheimnis mehr. Die Frage ist nur wann und wo?
Mittlerweile sind zwei Jahre seit dem
letzten Trip ins Land des Dolce Vita vergangen. Nicht, dass es in
Vergessenheit geraten wäre, nur wie eingangs schon erwähnt, ist die
Konstanz der Wellen nicht sehr groß. Der Stormrider Surf Guide
schätzt die Surftage auf gerade mal 120 im Jahr und meistens gibt es
dann nur zwei bis drei Tage am Stück surfbaren Swell.
The fact that one can find decent waves
in Bella Italia is not a secret anymore. The question is just, where
and when?
It's been two long years since our last trip to the country of Pasta and Pizza. Not that we forgot about it,
but as already mentioned, the consistency of waves is not very high
in this region. Stormrider Surf Guide states around 120 surfdays a
year. When the mediterranean hits, you’ll have to run. Short swell
windows will give you only two or three days of surfable waves until
it's flat again.
Um so größer war die Vorfreude, unsere südlichen Nachbarn endlich wieder mit einem Surftrip zu beehren. Die Nervosität stieg mit jedem Kilometer, den wir uns der Küste Liguriens näherten und wir hofften, den Forecast richtig gedeutet zu haben. Endlich- Ankunft in Levanto! Das Auto auf der Standpromenade geparkt und auf zum ersten Wellencheck. Verdammt! Es waren zwar Wellen zu erkennen, aber leider weit weg von surfbar. Es hieß Ruhe bewahren, denn der Forecast versprach gegen Nachmittag/Abend Besserung. Also ab ins Hotel und erstmal von der 8-stündigen Fahrt erholen. Doch an Erholung war kaum zu denken, da die innere Unruhe zum stündlichen Gang an den Strand trieb. Und endlich - am späten Nachmittag rollten 2ft Wellen mit einer Periode von ca. 7sec in die Bucht. Schei… egal, ab ins Wasser, nach zweimonatiger Salzwasser-Abstinenz war die Freude auf annähernd surfbare Wellen zu groß, um wählerisch zu sein.
One more reason why we could not hold
ourselves back to visit our southern neighbours once more. We got
more and more excited with every mile we got closer to the coast of
liguria (western Italy). We prayed that the forecast was right.
Finally, after 8 hours of driving, the
arrival at the beach of Levanto. We parked the car and ran across to
get the first glimpse of the conditions. Even if waves could be
identified, they were way too close to the shore and therefore not
surfable. That meant – off to the hotel to have a rest after the
exhausting journey. To be honest, we were just too nervous to relax.
Apparently the waves should be better in the afternoon. Around
5:30p.m. we were finally praised with a little but decent 2ft swell
with a period of approximately 7sec. Good enough! We finally had our
first session after two months without saltwater.
Die Surfbedingungen blieben in den
darauf folgenden Tagen unverändert. Aber die Freude überhaupt
surfen zu können überwog bei weitem den Ärger über die nicht
allzu guten Bedingungen. So blieb uns diesmal auch Zeit, die fünf
Dörfer der Cinque Terre bis nach La Spezia zu erkunden.
The conditions did not change a lot in
the next three days. But the joy we had to be able to surf in the
ocean again was worth every second. On top of that, it gave us time
to relax and to visit the five villages of the “Cinque Terre”
down to “la Spezia”.
